Noah: The Flood and the Rainbow
Video 7 of 22
The next event in the creation story is the Sabbath. The Sabbath is the seventh day when G-d rests and decides He's not going to do anymore work whatsoever. A few, pithy little verses that describe that, which we'll get into in a moment. The question is, is there a Sabbath event in the post-flood world? In other words, not a Sabbath literally, but is there some sort of event that corresponds to the Sabbath? By correspond, the way we would know whether it corresponds, is we would find language parallels that link the Sabbath to this event over here. In other words, something about the Sabbath language we would see showing up over here some time after Noah leaves the ark. Sometime after the speech to Noah there would be something that - some event whose language would remind us of the Sabbath in the world of creation.
The reason we would care about that is because the language would be indicative of something going on conceptually. There would be some sort of conceptual link between the Sabbath and this other mystery event - if we would find it - and seeing that link would kind of help us see in stereo. To the analogy we talked about before, the idea of the Bible layering meaning, creating layers of meaning or seeing two different versions of things and creating a sense of depth by merging them together in your mind. In this kind of case one version of this might be the Sabbath as it appears in the creation story, and another version of it might be whatever mystery event in the post-flood world that corresponds to the Sabbath - if there is a such a thing.
If language parallels indicate that there is such a thing, that corresponds to the Sabbath, then conceptually - in other words, just like the brain merges two images that come from your head, if you could imagine merging the ideas of the Sabbath with this other mystery event, it would give you sort of a 3D image. The same way that you have depth perception created by seeing two different things at once, you would have a sense of depth perception, so to speak, about this idea of the Sabbath. The Sabbath as something larger than just the Sabbath, it's the merger of these two ideas. Whatever the Sabbath is represented by in the post-flood world - if there is such a representation - there's some larger idea which allows the Sabbath to really come into focus, which is larger than either manifestation of the Sabbath, either here or here.
The questions is what is that idea? That would be a really cool thing if we could find it, if it exists. The first question of course is does it exist? Where would we find it? We'd find it if we go through all of the parallels we find - this is a little list of everything we found so far - if the pattern would continue then somewhere after - just like after over here the speech to mankind on the sixth day you would have the Sabbath, somewhere after that we would have this sort of mystery event. Of course the last event that we have that corresponds to the speech to mankind on the sixth day is right over here in Genesis Chapter 9, 9:1-7, so right after that, Genesis Chapter 9, starting from verse 8 is when we would look for this sort of mystery event, something that corresponds to the Sabbath. The question is can you find it?
So right over here I've reproduced the verses of Sabbath in Genesis, these three verses, and the question is, looking at that verse can you uncover - if you play paleontologist looking for your skeletons in the sand - can you uncover the beginnings of a ribcage here? Is there anything in the language over here that reminds you of stuff in Genesis Chapter 9 after Noah comes out of the ark?
Think about that, see what you come up with and we'll talk some more about it in our next video together.
